South Carolina does not need a direct coastal landfall for a home to see serious wind and rain. The nightmare is not always the entire roof flying away at once. It can begin at an edge, a soffit, a garage door, or a few missing shingles—and cascade from there.
How the cascade starts
Wind gets under a vulnerable roof edge or removes part of the covering. Rain reaches the deck. If deck seams are unsealed, water enters the attic and ceilings. If an opening fails, interior pressure can increase the loads pushing outward and upward. If the roof-to-wall connections are weak, the structure has fewer ways to carry those forces safely to the ground.
The roof-deck nightmare
The shingles are gone but the plywood could still be the home’s rain shield—except the seams were never sealed. IBHS testing behind the FORTIFIED program shows why a sealed roof deck matters: it can dramatically reduce water entry even after the roof covering is damaged. That can be the difference between a roof repair and an interior reconstruction.
The connection nightmare
A metal “hurricane strap” in a photograph does not prove a continuous load path. Connections need to be specified for actual loads and installed with the correct fasteners into the correct members. Roof deck to framing, roof to wall, wall to floor, and wall to foundation all have roles. Toe-nails and hopeful geometry are not an engineered strategy in high wind.
What resilience looks like before the storm
Appropriate deck thickness and fastening. Sealed deck seams. Reinforced and well-attached edges. Properly rated roof covering and attachments. Engineered roof-to-wall connections. Braced gable ends where required. Correctly attached soffits. Protected openings where the risk and design call for them. Garage doors and attached porches considered as part of the building—not accessories someone will figure out later.
No dishonest promises
No builder can make a home hurricane-proof. We can use tested, documented details that improve the odds, reduce water entry, and prevent avoidable weak links. That is a more valuable promise than a dramatic product label.
