Some of the saddest repairs begin with something chosen purely for curb appeal. The house photographs beautifully. Behind the shutter or trim, a screw hole, reverse lap, trapped joint, or missing flashing has been feeding water into wood for years.

The rotten-window-frame nightmare

Aesthetic shutters are fastened after the wall is complete. Holes are drilled through cladding and the drainage plane with no planned block, gasket, or flashing. The shutter holds debris and slows drying. Rain tracks toward the opening. Caulk ages. The homeowner eventually replaces what appears to be a bad window, only to discover rotten trim, sheathing, and framing around a perfectly decent unit.

The caulk-is-not-flashing nightmare

Sealant is useful and temporary. It moves, weathers, separates, and depends on clean surfaces and compatible materials. Flashing is arranged so gravity still wins after the caulk ages. Window sills drain outward. Jamb layers overlap correctly. Head flashing returns water to the wall’s drainage plane. The bottom is not sealed in a way that blocks the escape route.

The clean-roofline nightmare

Gutters are removed from the design because the elevation looks cleaner. Roof water now pounds planting beds, splashes lower walls, erodes soil, stains masonry, and concentrates beside the foundation. The solution may be discreet gutters, collector heads, rain chains with real drainage, wider overhangs, or a designed grade-level system—but there has to be a solution.

How we protect the aesthetic

We coordinate mounting blocks, fastener locations, trim thickness, flashing, drainage gaps, gutters, downspout routes, and landscaping before the exterior is “done.” That lets the architecture stay quiet without asking hidden wood to absorb the consequences.

A detail is not beautiful if it depends on nobody ever looking behind it.
