I love hardwood, plaster, stone, and natural mineral paint. I also do not believe a beige label and the word “organic” should end the conversation. The whole product matters, including binders, finishes, adhesives, sealers, backers, and how it cures.
The off-gassing nightmare
The house is finished, closed up, and immediately occupied. Fresh coatings, adhesives, cabinetry, composite wood, furniture, and cleaning products are all releasing emissions at once. A sensitive family member develops headaches or irritation, but nobody has a product list, emissions documentation, or a ventilation plan. Now every finish is a suspect and the beautiful new home feels unsafe.
Price is not indoor-air data
An expensive cabinet can still contain composite wood and adhesives. “Low-VOC” paint does not tell you everything about every ingredient or about other wet products in the room. Natural stone may need a sealer. Hardwood may carry a site-applied finish or adhesive. Ask for product-specific information and reputable emissions certifications where they apply.
Why we still love these materials
Hardwood can be repaired and refinished. Plaster and mineral finishes offer depth that plastic imitations do not. Stone brings permanence and tolerates daily life beautifully when it is correctly selected and detailed. We choose them for character and longevity—and then examine the complete system rather than making medical promises about a material category.
Source control plus ventilation
Choose lower-emitting products where practical. Protect materials from jobsite moisture and dust. Follow curing conditions. Clean thoroughly, change construction-loaded filters, and ventilate appropriately before occupancy. A tight, efficient home also needs planned fresh air and effective kitchen and bath exhaust; “the house leaks enough” is not an indoor-air strategy.
An honest health claim
No finish schedule can guarantee health or prevent illness. Low-VOC does not mean zero-emission or tolerable to every person. What we can do is reduce avoidable sources, document selections, control moisture and combustion, and design ventilation that works.
